The Bobbi Brown team recently asked me to participate in their Pretty Powerful Campaign, an inspirational campaign that combines both strength and beauty - exactly as it should be.
I was asked to write about a woman who inspires me.
A powerful woman. And a beautiful woman.
Well, I couldn't pick just one. I had to choose an entire team.
It's been almost six months since I've joined our local roller derby league, and I still can barely find the words to express what an experience it's been. I grew up playing sports - soccer, cheerleading, track and field - but it wasn't until joining a sports team as an adult that I learned the impact it can have on one's life. Our league consists of approximately 40 women. With ages spanning over 2 decades, our league is comprised of the most unique, fascinating, confident, beautiful and powerful women I've come to know.
I've met students, new mothers, single mothers, teachers, PhD's, professionals, long-time athletes, new athletes, artists and best of all, friends. They are kind, quirky, encouraging, confident, independent, opinionated and strong! They come in all sizes, shapes, ages and personalities. But one thing runs through us all - we're derby girls. Roller derby requires a lot of dedication, perseverance and physical demand. Regardless of where they are coming from, these ladies show up to every practice and bout ready to fight, not only for their own personal victories and accomplishments, but for the pride of a league. As a result, I find myself more motivated, self-accepting and confident.
Putting aside the sport itself, I'm forever amazed at what the SCAR derby women bring to the table when it comes to running our league. We recently celebrated our one year anniversary, and while I've only been around for half of it, it's been no easy feat! Starting a league, finding funding to keep it going and fostering the community and relationships within it is nothing short of running a business. Every time I attend a committee meeting, I'm so inspired by the time and talents that each woman offers for the betterment of the team. And seeing such independent and well-spoken women working together never ceases to amaze me.
This Saturday, we are hosting a bout for our A-team, which will benefit our local women's resource center. I will be working with the hospitality committee, and I couldn't be more proud to represent my team.
So, here's to SCAR derby - the prettiest and most powerful bad asses around!
Now ... it's YOUR turn! I want to know who inspires you!
